Southern Cross Calendar Company takes pride in the fact that we use environmentally friendly products to make our calendars. Minimising our utilisation of non-renewable resources and maximising recycling opportunities is the core of our Environmental Policy.
Paper
We primarily use Ambassador paper which contains 100% virgin fibre that is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain of custody certified. The company is beginning the process to be a Certified Printer under these regulations. The manufacturing process is Elemental Chlorine Free and operates under an Environmental Management System that is Certified by ISO 14001.
The balance is virgin fibre and is made using an Elemental Chorine- Free (ECF) bleaching process. This virgin fibre is obtained from approved forests and controlled, non-controversial wood sources.
Larger off cuts are stored and distributed free to local schools and kindergartens.
All waste paper is collected regularly by a local recycling company.
Chemicals
Our policy is to purchase water soluble chemicals where possible. Any chemical which cannot be disposed of via normal waste water systems is stored in metal drums. A waste management company collects these chemicals to dispose them of safely.
Non-solvent based inks and wash-up solutions are used where possible. Soy/vegetable based inks are also used depending on the application and end use of the product.
Other Waste
Our policy is to limit land fill waste. All waste from paper, cardboard, metal, plastic and wood pallet are separated and recycled with various local recycling companies. Garden waste is also recycled with a local garden recycler. Residual waste product is minimal and is disposed of via a waste removal company.
